É sempre bom recordar também alguns contributos de H. L. Mencken para a questão em causa:

"If x is the population of the United States, and y is the degree of imbecility in the average American, then democracy is the theory that x X y is less than y."

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard."

"Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right."
