A Lei Fundamental alemã, de 1949, refere-se a Deus duas vezes. No preâmbulo e no juramento do Presidente (a que estão também sujeitos o Chanceler e os ministros):
"I swear that I will dedicate my efforts to the well-being of the German people, enhance their benefits, avert hamm from them, uphold and defend the Constitution and the statutes of the Federation, fulfil my duties conscientiously, and do justice to all. So help me God."
Porém, a importância de tal referência é tanta (ou tão pouca) que o artigo que prevê o juramento estabelece que «The oath may also be taken without religious affirmation.»
